The city of Montevideo is directly connected to the Río de la Plata, the famous river that helped shape the city into what it is today. In this 3-hour walking tour, we will follow the Rambla, Montevideo’s iconic, uninterrupted 22 km-long waterfront promenade. Acting as the city’s main social, cultural, and recreational hub, it is also home to a remarkable variety of architecture along the riverside.

This Montevideo tour is all about architecture, and can be seen as a journey through time: from the rugged remains of El Bajo, once a lively port district, to the elegant neoclassical façades of the Ciudad Vieja, and from early 20th-century eclectic mansions to bold examples of modernist and contemporary design that define the city today. Along the way, we will explore how waves of immigration, economic booms, and political change have all left their mark on Montevideo’s urban landscape.

Expect a mix of hidden gems and iconic landmarks, stories of ambition and decline, and a deeper understanding of how architecture reflects the soul of the city.
